The Yard Test Manoeuvres

Motorcycle part 1a


 Starting Procedure

  1. Turn the fuel valve to “on” if applicable.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the “on” position (without starting)..
  3. Check the metres and warning lights.
  4. Ensure neutral is selected (green warning light on).
  5. Switch the engine “kill” switch to the “run” position.
  6. Operate the choke if necessary.
  7. Start the engine by pressing the start button or by kick starting it.
  8. Cancel the choke when applicable.

Stopping the Engine

  1. Switch off the accessories, if applicable.
  2. Stop engine by operating the engine “kill” switch.
  3. Turn the ignition to the “off” position.
  4. Turn the fuel valve off, iff applicable.
  5. Select 1st gear if applicable.


Moving Off Procedure

  1. Keep motorcycle stationary by applying the rear brake.
  2. Obey all road traffic signs, signals, rules and markings.
  3. Check mirrors and appropriate blind spot, if applicable.
  4. Signal intention, if applicable.
  5. Ensure that there is a clear space beyond the intersection before entering..
  6. Ensure that the intersection is clear before entering.
  7. Maintain clear space behind vehicle ahead before moving off (Approximately 4 – 5m).
  8. Select gear, if applicable.
  9. Obtain clutch control (manual).
  10. Observe 360 degrees (Rear-view mirrors and blind spot if applicable).
  11. Move off without lifting front wheel.
  12. Maintain balance and place both feet on the front foot pegs as soon as the motorcycle starts moving.
  13. Accelerate as necessary.
  14. Cancel the signal, if applicable.

Speed Management and Control

Starting at point “A”, you must ride towards cross-point “D” at 25 km/h without touching any boundary lines. Upon reaching point “C”, the rider should slow down evenly without skidding and should stop with the front wheel on cross-point “D”. If you go too slowly, you have 2 more attempts.

  1. Observe 360 degrees (Rear-view mirrors and blind spot if applicable).
  2. Perform move off procedure.
  3. Accelerate and change to a higher gear.
  4. Increase speed to 25 km/h without touching any boundary lines.
  5. Brake at line “C”.
  6. Select a lower gear if necessary.
  7. Stop with the front wheel on cross point “D” of the calibrated cross.
  8. Maintain balance and do not move motorcycle until stopping point has been determined.

 Moving off and Turning Left

Here you need to move off from point “R” towards point “U”, making a left turn at point “W” and stopping at point “N”. Move off again in the direction of point “V”, turning at point “X”, and returning to point “A” without touching any boundary lines, stalling, losing balance or allowing the motorcycle to roll.

  1. Go through Move Off Procedure.
  2. Change to 2nd gear.
  3. Check mirrors and left blind spot.
  4. Signal intention (left).
  5. Check mirrors and left blind spot again..
  6. Steer the motorcycle left at point “W”.
  7. Cancel the indicator.
  8. Signal intention to stop.
  9. Stop at point “N”.
  10. Select 1st gear.
  11. Obtain clutch control.
  12. Check the mirrors and both blind spots.
  13. Move off towards point “V”.
  14. Check mirrors and left blind spot.
  15. Signal intention (left).
  16. Turn left at point “X”.
  17. Ride back to point “A”.
  18. Stop.

 Lane Changing to the Right

You need to move off from point “A”, ride towards point “D” and perform a safe lane change to the right without touching the line “O P”, and then return to the examiner without touching any boundary lines, stalling or allowing the motorcycle to roll.

  1. Select 1st gear.
  2. Obtain clutch control.
  3. Check mirrors and blind spots.
  4. Follow Move off procedure and proceed towards point “D”.
  5. Change to 2nd gear.
  6. Check mirrors and right blind spot.
  7. Signal intention right.
  8. Check the right blind spot again.
  9. Steer into a lane on the right without crossing boundary line “O P”.
  10. Cancel the signal.

 Incline Start

You must start your vehicle on an incline and move off smoothly without rolling backwards, stalling, jerking or lifting the front wheel. You only get 1 attempt.

  1. Stop where indicated in the appropriate gear without allowing the motorcycle to move backwards.
  2. Remain stationary by applying the brake.
  3. Check mirrors and blind spot.
  4. Signal intention.
  5. Obtain clutch control.
  6. Observe 360 degrees (Rear-view mirrors and blind spot if applicable).
  7. Move off without rolling back or lifting the wheel.
  8. Place your feet on the footrests.
  9. Accelerate.
  10. Cancel the signal.
