Traffic Lights
Approach traffic lights with caution and respond appropriately
Flashing Red
- Check rear-view mirrors.
- Decelerate.
- Brake.
- Stop.
- Apply the handbrake , if necessary.
- Select neutral , if necessary
Flashing Red Arrow
Driver should stop but may turn if it is safe.
Steady Red
- Check rear-view mirrors.
- Decelerate.
- Brake.
- Stop.
- Apply the handbrake , if necessary.
- Select neutral , if necessary.
Green
- Check rear-view mirrors.
- On approach, look right, left and ahead for cross traffic, approaching traffic and/or pedestrians.
- Check the relevant blind spot, if necessary.
- Position the vehicle, if necessary.
- Check rear-view mirrors , if necessary.
- Brake, if necessary.
- Select the appropriate gear, if necessary.
- Stop, if necessary.
- Observe 360 degrees, if necessary.
- Move off/proceed if it is safe to do so.
Steady Green Arrow
Indicates vehicles may proceed in the direction of the arrow.
Flashing Amber
Give right of way to any traffic that was first to stop.
- Check rear-view mirrors.
- On approach, look right, left and ahead for cross traffic, approaching traffic and/or pedestrians.
- Decelerate, if necessary.
- Brake, if necessary.
- Select appropriate gear, if necessary.
- Proceed, if safe.
- Stop, if necessary.
- Apply hand brake, if applicable.
- Select neutral, if applicable.
- Select gear, if necessary.
- Observe, if applicable.
- Release handbrake, if applicable.
- Move off, if safe.
Steady Amber
A steady amber arrow indicates a driver should stop and wait for green before moving off.
- Check rear-view mirrors.
- Decelerate.
- Brake.
- Stop.
- Apply the handbrake, if necessary.
- Select neutral, if necessary A flashing green arrow with a steady red – allows cars in turn only lane to turn.
